About BARANO D'ISCHIADuring recent years, Ischia, defined as the green island because of its abundance of pine trees, has seen a notable increase in the number of tourists attracted by its wealth of thermal fountains, and the elegance of its hotels and rendezvous, especially since the finding of the beneficial radioactive emanations in the geological make up of the island. Ischia is the largest of the islands in the Bay, and has about 40.000 inhabitants in its seven comunes, into which the island is administratively subdivided. Its area is more than 46 square kilometres. It is hilly, the highest point being Mount Epomeo (789 m.) on whose slopes the vines of the famous white wine of Ischia are cultivated. The coast, which is very uneven, offers enchanting beaches and delightful spots to land. By ship or by motor-boat (one can also go by helicopter) one arrives at a natural port, a perfect circle, cut of an ancient crater, which was opened to the sea by means of an outlet cut towards the middle of the last century. One’s stay in Ischia will be varied and enjoyable, for the vastness of the island allows one to rest among the pine trees or on the lonely little beaches, or to accept the welcome of` the elegant rendezvous, if in search of amusement. The relics of the ancient life of the island are preserved in a tiny museum which contains some highly interested excavated objects. The great Castle built in 1441 on a natural rock bears witness to the splendour of Aragon times, when the court of Alfonso of Aragon and Lucrezia Alagno went there. Interesting trips can be made to Casamicciola, 5 km from Ischia Porto: this happy resort is famous for its thermal establishments. Lacco Ameno, 2 km. from Casamicciola, is also rich in thermo-mineral springs of high radioactive quality, and is one of Italy’s most noted centres of high life, having luxury hotels and beauty cure establishments. Other pleasant trips can be made to: Forio d’Ischia, the place on the head-land at whose point stands the little Church of Succour; Serrara Fontana, 360 m. 2lt., on Epomeo, affords a point from which one can enjoy a breath-taking view of the island.
