About PROCIDAProcida is the extreme end of the Bay of the Sirens: the little island for centuries remained locked in its modest beauty, amidst its little white houses and lemon groves (those enormous lemons which grow only here). It was ‘discovered’ by Lamartine, who set his celebrated Graziella on Procida. The main activity is seafaring: a flourishing naval school sends out hundreds of sailors and officers to serve on merchant ships and liners so keeping up the honour and tradition of illustrious Procida. But in recent years this tranquil island has been opened up to tourists: excellent hotels, gracious haunts, blessed with the cordial hospitality and simplicity of the people, receive ever larger numbers of tourists. One arrives there by boat, which crosses the Bay and afterwards touches Ischia. One may pass an enchanting day here, savouring the tasty local dishes, eating ‘coniglio alla cacciatora’ (the island has many rabbits), and sipping the exquisite local wine. A little beach affords the opportunity for bathing and underwater fishing, for here the fisher can find ample grounds for his sport. But the favourite pastime of those who come to Procida is to lie in the coolness and the fragrance of the lemon trees, before a breathtaking panorama, waiting for rabbit in salmì, far from the light hearted bustle that reigns on the sister islands of Capri and Ischia. But Procida boasts a glorious past, as is evidenced by the statue to the Martyrs of the Risorgimento, the immense Aragonese castle, and the roll of its islanders who have died at sea.
