About AMALFIAmalfi is the most ancient of` the maritime republics of Italy, and proud of being the birthplace of Flavio Gioia, the inventor of the compass. Today it is a little white township mirrored in the blue Amalfi coast, It is but a few kilometres from Ravello, Positano, Atrani, Agerola and the other gems of the coast between Salerno and Naples. Its very mild climate, the perfect hospitality of its hotels (one of which is an old monastery), the opportunity it affords for bathing, the trips to be made roundabout, all have made Amafi a mecca for international tourists for tens of years. The Duomo, whose Romanic facade stands at the top of a long flight of steps, is Amalfi’s main artistic attraction, but there is also the Grotto of the Arsenal, where the little but militant republic built her galleys; and the Town Hall where the famous Amalfi Tables, the ancient codex containing the maritime laws of the republic, are preserved. Worthy of the Blue Grotto of Capri, there is near Amalfi, along the coast, the Emerald Grotto, where the light penetrates through the water creating an emerald green colour among the stalactites and stalagmites.
