About RAVELLO300 metres above the sea, on the Amalfi Coast, stand the white houses of silent, sweet perfumed Ravello, the ruins of its Arab-Sicel palaces, and its richly cultivated gardens. That of the Villa Rufolo, in fact, inspired Wagner’s ‘Klingsor Garden’ scene in Parsifal. The Duomo, standing in the square from which there is an excellent panorama, is Romanic, and has a magnificent bronze door of 1179, a fine mosaic pergamo and a double windowed bell tower. The greatest enchantment of Ravello is the celebrated villas, the Rufolo palace and the Villa Cimbrone, from which one may enjoy one of the most magnificent ladscapes in the world: the vivacious profile of the coast, the colours of the sea, the rocks and vegetation which fall down to the water below. Isolated from the nosiy ‘mass’ tourist routes, Ravello is by nature an aristocratic place, an oasis of peace and respite for the soul. In June it is filled with music lovers, attracted by the now traditional Wagner Festival, which is held in the Villa Rufolo, with the backcloth of the sea, where Wagner himself was enthralled by the countryside of Campania. Great orchestras and famous soloists give a cycle of concerts of almost wholly Wagnerian music; the fascination of nature adds, in an unexpressable and unforgettable way, to the dreamlike emotion of the music.
