NATIONAL GALLERY OF UMBRIA - Perugia
The National Gallery of Umbria is one of the richest museum collections in central Italy, with master pieces of international interest. It contains paintings, sculptures, ceramics, tapestries and gold work, mostly sacred, with examples of the art traditions which developed between the 13th and 19th centurie. The main attractions of the museum are:
- sculptures by Arnolfo di Cambio (The Scribe)
- paintings by Duccio di Buoninsegna (Madonna and Child)
- Gentile da Fabriano (Madonna and Child with Angels)
- Beato Angelico (the Guidalotti polyptych)
- Perugino (Adoration of the Magi, the Dead Christ, the Madonna of the Confraternity of Consolation, the St. Augustine polyptych and a Pietà )
There are many works by Pinturicchio, including the Santa Maria dei Fossi altarpiece, and Piero della Francesca is represented by the St. Anthony polyptych. There is also Benedetto Bonfigli, who decorated the Priors Chapel with works inspired by the stories of St. Herculanus and St. Louis of Toulouse; Bartolomeo Caporali (Madonna and Child with Angels); and Francesco di Giorgio Martini (Flagellation). The painting Gallery is also organized into various theme areas, collections of historical documents on Perugia, topographic maps, and a Treasury which holds precious items from various museums and churches in Perugia.
