OPERA METROPOLITANA MUSEUM – Siena
This museum is next to the Duomo, in what would have been the southern aisle of the nave of the Nuovo Duomo. Its great artworks formerly adorned the duomo, including the 12 statues of prophets and philosophers by Giovanni Pisano that decorated the façade. However, the museum’s main draw is Duccio di Buoninsegna’s striking early 14th century Maestà , painted on both sides as a screen for the Duomo’s high altar. The front and back have now been separated and the panels depicting the Story of the Passion hang opposite the Maestà . It is interesting to compare Buoninsegna’work with Martini’s slightly later Maestà in the Palazzo Pubblico. Other artists represented in the museum are Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Simone Martini and Taddeo di Bartolo. The collection also included tapestries and manuscripts.
