SPADA GALLERY - Milan
The famous Spada Gallery is hosted in the magnificent homonimous building, built in 1540. It is an important collection of paintings and furniture of 17th and 18th centuries. The Spada Palace, which faces Via Capo di Ferro, was built in 1540 according to Cardinal Capo di Ferro's will. In 1640 cardinal Bernardino Spada charged Francesco Borromini to renew his building. In 1927 it was bought by the Italian State and today is the Council of State.
The Baroque façade is one of the most elegant and original existing in Rome, adorned, on the first floor, with big statues situated in niches. The columned gallery by Borromini seems four times longer than it really is thanks to its sloping floor perspective effects, its descending vault, its convergent walls, its particular columns. The marvelous inner rooms are adorned with marbles, stucco-works and frescoes. You can notice the hall of the "General Assemblies" that is of particular interest.
Several cardinals collected a splendid paintings set, today showed inside the famous Spada Gallery. It is an important paintings and furniture collection of 17th and 18th centuries, and is settled in four decorated large halls with 16th century's frescoes . You can admire many works by Rubens, Caravaggio, Guido Reni and Salvator Rosa. We can point out "Visitation" by Andrea del Sarto and "Dido’s death" by Guercino.
